When to use Read Aloud

Common ways to listen to text with this tool:

  • Proofread a draft by ear

Paste your draft, press play, and follow the live highlighting to catch phrasing errors the eye skips. No length limit, and nothing leaves your machine.

  • Study pronunciation at reduced speed

Paste a passage in another language, slow the speed slider down, and listen while the words highlight as they are spoken.

  • Read a page aloud for a blind user

The full workflow works with the keyboard alone: paste the text, play it, and press Escape to stop at any time.

  • Listen hands-free with saved settings

Your voice, speed, and pitch are remembered on the same device, so the tool opens ready for the next listen.

  • Compare voices before recording a voiceover

Preview each voice with a short sample and pick the one that fits your script before you commit.

Frequently asked questions

Is my text uploaded to a server?
No. All speech synthesis happens locally in your browser using the Web Speech API. Your text is never sent anywhere โ€” it never leaves your device.
Why are there different voices (or none at all)?
The app uses the voices installed on your operating system and browser. Desktop systems usually offer many voices; phones and some browsers offer fewer. If a voice is missing, try another browser or operating system.
Is there a character or daily limit?
No. Unlike many online text-to-speech services, there is no daily quota or character cap โ€” paste as much text as you like and play it.
Can I save the speech as an audio file (MP3)?
No. This tool plays speech directly in the browser and does not export audio files. For MP3 export, use a dedicated text-to-speech service.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. It works in Android and iOS browsers, using the voices available on that device. Some mobile browsers speak only the first listed voice or load voices slowly โ€” that is a browser limitation, not a setting.
