Tone Generator
Play any tone from 16 Hz to 20 kHz. Test your speakers and hearing range right in the browser.
Loud sustained tones can damage your hearing. Start with low volume and keep sessions short.
16 Hz to 20 kHz over 30 seconds
When to use the Tone Generator
Common ways to use the Tone Generator:
-
Speaker response check
Play the tone and step the frequency from 16 Hz up to 20,000 Hz with the slider, presets or the sweep, listening for roll-off at the low end and cutoff at the high end.
-
Hearing range check
Lower the volume to a comfortable level, then test low frequencies (16-100 Hz) and high frequencies (10-20 kHz) one by one, or run the sweep and note where the sound disappears.
-
Per-speaker testing
Select the Left or Right channel and play the same frequency sequence, so a dead or underperforming driver on one side is identified immediately.
-
Reference tone and calibration
Type or slide to an exact frequency and play a pure sine tone as a stable reference for tuning or audio-chain calibration.
-
Mobile usage
Fully usable at 375px width with no horizontal scroll, with touch-friendly controls for testing phone output and earbuds on the go.
Tone Generator FAQ
- What frequencies can I play?
- Any frequency from 16 Hz to 20,000 Hz (20 kHz), in 1 Hz steps. Use the slider for quick changes or the number field for an exact value.
- Why can't I hear some of the tones?
- Very low frequencies need volume and a speaker with real bass response, and very high frequencies are often inaudible to older ears or filtered out by headphones (especially Bluetooth). If a tone is silent, that tells you the limit of your equipment or hearing at that frequency.
- Can I use this on my phone?
- Yes. The app is fully responsive. For accurate high-frequency testing use wired earphones, since Bluetooth codecs commonly cut off the highest frequencies.
- Is my data private?
- Yes. Everything runs locally in your browser: no account, no upload, no tracking of the frequencies you play. Standard site analytics may still load on production pages.
- What does the sweep do?
- The sweep plays a single continuous tone that glides from 16 Hz to 20,000 Hz on a logarithmic scale over 30 seconds - a quick way to hear where your speakers or hearing fall off.
Tone Generator Help
Getting started
- Choose a frequency: drag the slider or type an exact value (16 Hz - 20,000 Hz).
- Pick a waveform (sine is the purest reference tone), a channel (Both, Left or Right) and a comfortable volume.
- Press Play (or Space) and listen. Stop with the same button.
- To check your whole range in one go, press Start sweep: a tone glides from 16 Hz to 20 kHz over 30 seconds.
- Use the presets to jump to standard testing frequencies (125 Hz - 8 kHz).
Tips
- Start with low volume - loud sustained tones can damage your hearing.
- Use wired headphones for accurate high-frequency testing; Bluetooth often cuts the highest frequencies.
- Very low frequencies need real bass and volume; silence at 16-60 Hz may be your speakers' limit, not yours.
