When to use Webcam Test

Common ways to use Webcam Test:

  • Pre-meeting camera check

A call is in five minutes. Enable the camera, allow the permission prompt, and see your live preview before you join with confidence.

  • Diagnose a camera that does not work

When your camera fails in a meeting app, get a specific diagnosis - permission denied, device busy, or no device - with the exact next step.

  • Check framing and lighting for an interview

Turn on the mirror and framing grid, adjust your position and light until you look right, and capture a snapshot to confirm.

  • Verify the resolution your calls will receive

Pick 480p, 720p, or 1080p and read the actual delivered resolution and frame rate, so you know what a video call will actually get.

  • Quick check on a phone or tablet

Run the same check on the exact device the call will happen on, with front or rear camera where your mobile browser exposes them.

Webcam Test FAQ

How do I test my webcam?
Press Enable camera, allow the browser permission prompt, and you will see a live preview. Use the mirror, framing grid, and resolution selector to check how you look, then Stop camera when you are done.
Does this tool record or upload my video?
No. The live preview and any snapshot are processed entirely in your browser on your device and are never uploaded or stored by this tool. Standard site analytics may still load on production pages.
Why is my camera not showing up?
Check that no other app is using the camera, re-allow camera access for this site via the browser's site settings, and check your operating system's camera privacy settings. On Windows or macOS, the OS-level toggle sits above browser permissions. If the camera still does not appear, reconnect the device or update its driver.
The picture is dark or grainy - what should I do?
This is almost always lighting, not a broken camera. Place a light in front of you rather than behind you, and use the mirror plus framing grid to check your position. A better-lit face improves image quality more than a more expensive camera.
What resolution should my camera have for video calls?
720p at a steady 24-30 fps is comfortably enough for video calls. Use the resolution selector to test 720p or 1080p and read the actual delivered resolution and frame rate in the stream info. If the measured frame rate is well below 30, low light is the usual cause.
